Our Story
MaltiDhar is a Banarasi silk saree brand based in Dubai, UAE, founded to carry the craft of Varanasi's handloom weavers to South Asian women living across the world. We source directly from weaver families in Banaras. We ship across the UAE and GCC. And we believe that a saree is never just a saree — it is a feeling, a memory, a thread that connects you to exactly where you come from.
The name behind the brand
MaltiDhar is not a made-up name. It is two real people.
Malti is the founder's grandmother. Her name means mogra — the jasmine flower that blooms at night and fills every room before you even know it is there. Worn in women's hair at weddings. Offered at temple doorways. The scent of home, of celebration, of belonging. Delicate. Enduring. Impossible to forget.
Giridhar is her grandfather. Giridhar is another name for Lord Krishna — the mountain-lifter, the one who sheltered an entire village on his little finger. Strength that does not announce itself. Protection that simply holds. The divine made intimate.
Together, the name carries everything the brand believes in. The mogra flower and the mountain. Grace held by strength. The feminine and the enduring, inseparable.
The flower and the mountain
Every decision MaltiDhar makes traces back to these two ideas — grace and strength.
Grace in the silk itself, in the warmth of every word we write, in the care taken with every order packed and shipped. Strength in the craft behind each saree, in the direct relationships with weaver families, in the refusal to misrepresent or cut corners on quality.
A Banarasi saree is both things at once — impossibly delicate silk over a structure that lasts generations. MaltiDhar exists to honour that.
Born in Dubai, rooted in Banaras
The founder was born in Varanasi — the city on the Ganges where Banarasi silk was born. She grew up surrounded by the sound of pit looms, the smell of raw silk, the sight of zari catching morning light through a haveli window.
She moved to Dubai as part of the South Asian diaspora that now calls the UAE home. And she noticed something: the women around her, deeply culturally rooted — had no brand that spoke to them. Every major saree brand was built for India. Nobody was speaking to the woman who left India but never let India leave her.
MaltiDhar was built for her.
Two collections. One philosophy.
MaltiDhar offers two collections, because we believe Banarasi silk should be accessible and aspirational — not one or the other.
The Malti Collection is everyday grace. Powerloom and blended Banarasi weaves - For Diwali dinners, family gatherings, office celebrations, and the ordinary Tuesday that deserves something beautiful. This is the collection that makes silk a habit, not an occasion.
The Giridhar Collection is handloom, heirloom, heritage. Pure handloom Banarasi sarees sourced directly from weaver families in Varanasi. Each piece takes 15 to 45 days to weave on a traditional pit loom. Each one is made to be passed down. This is the collection for weddings, for gifting, for the moments that become the stories your family tells for decades.
Both collections are honestly described. Powerloom is powerloom. Handloom is handloom. We never misrepresent.
Direct from the loom to you
Most saree brands buy from wholesalers who buy from traders who buy from weavers. By the time a saree reaches a customer, it has passed through four or five pairs of hands — and the weaver, who did all the work, earned the least.
MaltiDhar works differently. We source directly from weaver families in Varanasi. We know the people who made what we sell. This is not a marketing claim — it is the reason MaltiDhar exists.
Direct sourcing means the weaver earns fairly. It means we can guarantee authenticity. And it means every saree carries a story we can actually tell — because we were there when it was made.
What we believe
We believe a saree is never just a purchase. It is worn at a wedding, passed to a daughter, brought out on an anniversary twenty years later. MaltiDhar speaks to that emotional weight in everything it creates.
We believe cultural pride needs no explanation. The South Asian woman living in Dubai, London, or New York does not need to justify her love of Banarasi silk to anyone. MaltiDhar gives her that confidence — never preachy, never gatekeeping, always warm.
We believe honest luxury is the only luxury worth having. Quality, story, and care — not discounts, not urgency, not tricks.
Where we are going
MaltiDhar begins with Banarasi silk. But the vision is larger. India changes every hundred kilometres — its language, its fabric, its way of celebrating life. Over the next five to ten years, MaltiDhar will grow to carry every Indian craft tradition to the women of the world who carry India in their hearts. The handloom artisan is not our backstory. They are our foundation.
This is the beginning.
Woven with memory, worn with love.
Grace · Strength · Pride
Banaras to the world.
